The presence of a herpes-type virus has been demonstrated in various species of marine shellfish (bivalves and gastropoda) throughout different regions of the world (Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia), and is frequently associated with high mortality levels. Nevertheless, apart from the sanitary monitoring in mollusc farming, very little data is available about the detection of this type of virus in the natural populations of bivalves and about the persistence of such viruses in sea water. Various diagnostic tools have been developed in order to detect the oyster herpes virus (Ostreid herpesvirus, OsHV).
